How to Beat Workout Boredom

Article posted in: Lifestyle

It happens to the best of us: We sign up for a gym and go religiously for a few weeks. We’re feeling good, and can’t help but pat ourselves on the back for making the commitment to a new healthy habit. But then it happens… Boredom sets in. Our workouts start waning and eventually come to a complete stop because we simply cannot bear the thought of staring at the same soundless television while walking on the same tired treadmill.

But staying active is important—whether you want to lose weight or you just want to stay healthy and happy. Keep activity a priority and ward off workout boredom with these simple strategies:

1. Mix it Up
If you’re typically an exercise do-it-yourself-er, try catching a boot-camp, Zumba or yoga class. If you’ve been totally committed to cardio, consider working some resistance training into your routine. If you’re sick of staring at the same gym walls, keep things interesting by alternating gym workouts with walks outside or workout DVDs you can do at home.

2. Enlist a Pal
Not only will bringing a buddy in on your exercise plan help hold you accountable, it will make exercising feel like fun. Catch up with your spouse while power-walking through your neighborhood, or challenge a coworker to some friendly competition at the bowling alley after work. Whatever it is you like to do, we’re pretty sure you’ll like it better if a loved one is involved.

3. Pump Up Your Playlist
Sometimes mixing up your music is all it takes to breathe new life into your workout routine. Ask friends and coworkers what songs get them going or do an internet search for the best beats for your activity of choice. Try arranging your playlist so that it gets you pumped up in the beginning and keeps you moving at the end.

4. Opt for the Unconventional
If your exercise routine has become, well, too routine, try something totally out of the box—something that doesn’t feel like exercise. Grab a friend and sign up for indoor rock-climbing. Spend a date night taking dance lessons with your spouse. Find ways to torch calories without realizing you’re doing it, and you’ll reap all the benefits of exercise without feeling like it’s a chore.
