“I would be willing to tell my story to anyone to help them.”Article posted in: Success Stories - Men
They say when you do something good for someone else, it comes back double for you. And for John L., it turned out to be true: He joined Nutrisystem to support a friend who was also struggling with his weight and wound up losing 85 pounds of his own*—and enjoying major benefits he didn’t think possible.
John had been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. “That scared me to death,” he says. “I tried to lose weight, and I did, but only for a few months, and then I would put it back on.”
By trying Nutrisystem, John has achieved results—and he’s managed to keep those results around. And that’s with the most tempting job around: John works in the restaurant industry, where food is all everywhere, all the time. He says his willpower has stayed strong because he’s focused on the major benefits as he’s progressed.
“My doctor told me I’m a model patient,” he says. “He thinks I rolled time back 15 to 20 years.”
It wasn’t always easy, he says, but when things got tough, he focused on his goals and armed himself with the willpower-helping pre-prepared snacks. “Each week I prepare snacks in groups,” he says. “I keep a refrigerator bag with all my items in it. I eat as needed, even at the restaurant.”
People who spend more time prepping healthy food lose more weight, according to a study published in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine. A bonus: Scientists found food preppers also spent less money on food. But you don’t have to spend hours each day chopping—follow John’s lead, and do it all at once, once per week. Load up a cabinet or fridge drawer with chopped vegetables in containers, as well as pre-portioned Nutrisystem meals and snacks, so when a craving strikes, you can crush it.
And while you’re enjoying your snack, make like John again—refocus on your goals: “Look at your starting picture, your starting weight, your medical history, get out some old clothes,” he says. To keep yourself moving on your journey, remember why you started. Envision why you want to lose weight, whether it’s to live longer, have more energy or to walk into an office and have nobody recognize you. That happened to John, and it felt great.
“I went to my accountant, who I see in person about once a year,” he says. “I walked in, and they did not know who I was…they could not believe it. People will see me and say, ‘oh my, how did you do that?’” he says. The answer: Nutrisystem, and a little help from a friend.
