Not only does it require minimal ingredients, but the oven does most of the work. All that’s left for you to do is enjoy a tasty dish packed with healthy goodness!

How to Cook Chicken in a Dutch Oven

To make this healthy chicken dinner, get started by preheating the oven to 325 degrees. Next, heat the Dutch oven on the stovetop over medium heat and melt one tablespoon of butter. Add the thinly sliced sweet onions and minced garlic and cook for 15 to 20 minutes until softened.

Set the onions aside and move them to a plate for later. Melt more butter in the Dutch oven and season both sides of the chicken with ground black pepper. Sear each side of the chicken for about three minutes and set it aside.

To build up more flavor, de-glaze with beef broth, stirring to scrape up those delicious brown bits left behind on the bottom of the Dutch oven. Then stir in balsamic vinegar, black pepper, thyme and your reserved cooked onions into the Dutch oven. Add halved baby potatoes before nesting the seared chicken on top.

Pop into your preheated oven for 20 to 30 minutes until chicken is cooked through. For an added bonus, sprinkle gruyere cheese on top of your Dutch Oven French Onion Chicken before returning it to the oven for just long enough for it to melt. Now you have a restaurant worthy dish that’s perfect for date night or weeknight family dinners!
